You can be redeemed in the eyes of the public for almost anything you do. You can kill someone, like Ted Kennedy did. You can lie and steal like the religous leaders do. But, you cannot aid and abet child molesting, much less be a child molester yourself. There is no return from that taint.
For all the good Joe Paterno did for Penn State and his players and program, he is forever tainted by child molestation. He didn't molest anyone, and he reported his second hand info to his superiors. But, and thanks to the Catholic Church on this one, that's not enough anymore. Even on hearsay information, you must go to the police or be held accountable yourself if the truth comes out.
I think the leaders of Penn State stonewalled this issue. The assistant coach was well liked and was the groomed successor to Joe Paterno. It looks good when you open a "charity" to "help" underprivleged kids. Hell, these days that should be enough of a warning sign. It wouldn't surprise me if the President of the school went to jail on this one, or was at least convicted of something. And, think of the civil lawsuit that the taxpayers of Pennsylvania are going to have to cough up for allowing this predator continued access to Penn State facilites.
I would think that when you're caught with a 10 year old and you're both naked in the shower, that should have done it right there.
I have sympathy for the victims, but one of them isn't Joe Paterno.
